Living green

As romantic as it sounds, living in a teepee and growing my own veggies is not going to happen anytime soon. I love inner city living and modern conveniences a little too much.

But even as a busy Mum juggling life's demands, there are many simple things we can all do to reduce our impact on the environment. By reducing wastage, avoiding chemicals and limiting our consumption of meat and processed foods means we are all contributing to a healthier planet for our children.

"As people alive today, we must consider future generations: a clean environment is a human right like any other. It is therefore part of our responsibility toward others to ensure that the world we pass on is as healthy, if not healthier, than we found it." His Holiness The Dalai Lama.

Cleaning

Why buy harsh chemicals when you can use natural, everyday household products for cleaning! Some of my favourite cleaning products include:
  • eucalyptus oil - kills germs and smells great too, I use it diluted in water on everything
  • vinegar - super cheap and effective glass and surface cleaner
  • bicarb soda - amazing abrasive cleaner, great in the bathroom and laundry

Food preparation

It's not always possible to buy organic, local food. It can be expensive and hard to find good quality produce when you are a busy Mum on a tight budget.
  • soak fruit and veggies in water with apple cider vinegar to remove nasty pesticides
  • keep fruit and veggies in the crisper to make them last longer
  • instead of wrapping leftover food in plastic, keep it in recycled glass jars or airtight containers
  • wash and dry strawberries and lay them out on a plate, they will last much longer
  • reduce your meat consumption, why not try participating in Meatless Monday?
  • avoid factory farmed meat and animal products, large scale produce requires a lot of resources. we buy free range eggs, pork and chicken
  • shop at your local farmers market for fresh, local produce that's in season and ethically produced
